This desktop tower has the 95W version of Phenom X4 9750. Performance wise, it's comparable to the Intel Q6600 Quad Core processor. In the Vista performance indicator, both CPU's come by a 5.9 on computational power. Since this uses the nforce chipset for both the SATA DVD writer and SATA hard drives, you may have some issues reinstalling Vista or other OS's on it; but with the generous drivers from Nvidia, it shouldn't prove a immense plight. With the PC, you also score a Geforce 9100 integrated graphics (with DVI and VGA out), which makes it radiant big as a non-gaming workstation. There's 1 chunky sized PCI-E that can engage a graphics card upgrade. The power supply is only 300W, but that's serene mostly sufficient for something like a coarse powered version of the Nvidia 9600GT card (which is what I upgraded with), as the CPU itself doesn't prefer as powerful power. The 750GB HD is nice a vast. The layout of the case is a exiguous unusual (inverted from most PC's, as it opens from the proper rather than the left), but is plenty colossal and has excellent airflow. Astronomical value for $600. (I bought this from Fry's Electronics on sale for $550 + tax, which ends up being glowing finish to the $600 mark sign.) Highly Recommended!
Though it wasn't exactly easy to verify this beforehand, this system is well-supported by Ubuntu 9.04. All the hardware works out of the box, and the Nvidia GPU supports acceleration through Nvidia's proprietary drivers.
There seems to be a lot of debate among reviewers, however, noting that this system is largely filled with year-old technology and noting that there are Intel-based competitors that accomplish better on benchmarks. I would argue this depends what you're doing with it however. Personally I wanted:
1. A Quad Core CPU
2. 8 GB or more of RAM
3. an Nvidia based graphics solution
And the fact that you can collect all that for this cheap is nothing short of grand. It might not be bleeding edge on everything but when it comes time to compile something it positive feels like it.
Recently bought a HP P6130F to replace a 5 year archaic Compac. It has what I was looking for: HP computer, Quad Core processor, 8GB RAM, and a Nvidia graphics card. All for under $600. It has a very quite operation. I have been shopping for a while and I conception that for this label range, I would have to stick with an Intel graphics chipset. Saw it in the HP website and bought from Amazon.
